Top Fund Raiser Award (New Rider)
This page is placed as a quick Overview of the progress on the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) - Ride For Sight - Top Fund Raiser Award (New Rider) 2006.
This Award is being produced as 9 serialized "Limited Edition" Castings to be awarded for a 12 month period to the Top Fund Raiser that is a New Rider to the Ride For Sight Program. The program is a National promotion made possible by a grant from Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC).
The individual plaques will be distributed and awarded on the "Regional/Provincial level" making the profile of this project extend from coast to coast to coast.
The original image that the plaque is based on was generously donated by Greg Cooney of
The bike pictured is a vintage 1923 Indian Scout that Mr. Cooney has meticulously restored.
Greg's Site, linked above is the premier International Indian Site with users from every Indian riding country posting images, tips, tricks and even selling bikes and parts.
The image above is the initial proof that was approved by the FFB's Ann Morrison (Manager Annual Giving). The Image is composed of numerous "Histogram" filters derived from the original image creating a sketched appearance while retaining a high degree of accuracy of scale and detail to the original image.
The Histogram image is converted to a 3 dimensional tool-path that is machined into a billet of EPS Construction foam. The machining is performed over a 4 hr machine run by a computer controlled 3-axis Milling machine.
The Foam pattern is used as a "Consumable Pattern" that is embedded in sand and cast into Aluminum. The process used is a "Destructive Pattern" process, meaning that each casting requires it's own pattern. This feature ensures that each casting is truly unique, and is identified with a serial number that is part of the casting in the back of the plaque.
The rough castings are surface ground to a #220 Grit "Brushed Finish" with all recesses painted a high Gloss Black.
The plaques are mounted on a pine backing raised 1/4" with spacers to create even more depth with the illusion that the plaque is floating over the wood.
The backing board is 16" by 16", with a routed edge profile that mirrors the edge profile of the casting and a simple black air-brushed boundary to tie the dissimilar mediums together.
The area below the casting is left blank for the Region/Provincial Identification, as well as many years of award recipient names.
